Stretches for Your Neck
A healthy back includes a healthy neck. Adding routine neck stretches into your exercise routine will help prevent neck pain, shoulder problems, and unexpected injuries, while contributing to a healthy strong back. The chiropractor team at Oxford Rehabilitation Center in Philadelphia, PA encourages you to learn the following neck stretches to help manage your neck pain.
Side to Side Neck Stretch: Standing with your feet at hip-width and your arms at your sides, gently tilt your head to touch your ear to your shoulder. Try to do this while keeping your shoulders relaxed. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds. Return your head to the starting point and repeat on the other side.
Front and Back Stretch: While standing or sitting with back straight and looking forward, slowly and gently lower your head to touch your chest. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds. Return to starting position. Next, slowly and gently tilt your head up to look at the ceiling. Hold the stretch for 10 seconds and return to the starting position.
Right to Left Stretch: Seated or standing with your head looking forward and shoulders down, slowly and gently move your head to look to the right. Hold the stretch. Return to starting position. Slowly and gently look to the left and hold the stretch.
Shoulder Roll Stretch: Look straight ahead, raise both shoulders toward your ears, and gently roll them back and forward in a circular motion. You’ll feel a stretch in both your shoulders and neck. Roll for 5 times rolling front to back, then 5 times back to front.
