Physical Therapy FAQ

Do I need a referral from my physician to see a physical therapist?

That depends on your insurance. Some insurance providers require all patients to acquire a referral in order to see a physical therapist. Check with your insurance to see your restrictions. More recently, Physical Therapists that are licensed as “Direct Access Providers” can see patients without a doctor referral initially, treating the patient for up to one month before needing a physician referral, but always check with your insurance provider first.

What should I expect on my first physical therapy visit?

During your first physical therapy visit, your physical therapist will perform a thorough evaluation that will take between 45 to 60 minutes. In this evaluation, your PT will review your medical history, ask questions regarding your pain location and levels, assess your posture, perform a neurological screening and assess your range of motion and strength to better understand your condition. Your physical therapist will then use that information to develop an in-office and home exercise program treatment plan.

How long with my physical therapy visit last?

Your regular visits will last between 30 to 90 minutes depending on what type of therapy exercises/treatments you’ll need.

How does the physical therapist measure my progress?

Your physical therapist will perform regular interim evaluations to assess your progress. Approximately every 30 days your physical therapist will compare your progress to the previous evaluation and update your program to ensure the best treatment outcomes.

How can I schedule an appointment to see the physical therapist?

To schedule your appointment, you’ll first need to check with your insurance provider to see if you need a referral from your doctor. You can then go to contact us or call us at (215) 725-2000 to schedule your appointment. You can also speak to our representatives and ask them any additional questions you may have.

What should I wear to my physical therapy appointment?

You should wear loose-fitting, comfortable attire to ensure maximum comfort throughout the appointment. Make sure to wear athletic shoes so that you can effectively do the physical therapy exercises. If you have hip, ankle, knee, or foot injury you should wear shorts. Females who have shoulder issues should wear a tank top or a loose-fitting short sleeve shirt to ensure your physical therapist can reach the injured area.

What should I bring to my physical therapy appointment?

For your first visit, you’ll need to bring the necessary documents to fill out the paperwork. This includes items such as your driver’s license, insurance card, MRI, X-rays or any notes from your primary care physician. If you’re currently using a brace, crutches, or a splint you’ll need to bring that with you as well.
